Sealand
(Principality of)

Currency of Sealand:

Sealand has minted coins intermittently since the early 1970s, although as with the Principality's stamps, few details are readily available, and it does not appear that any have been released in recent years. The unit of currency is the Sealand Dollar, which is maintained at parity with the US Dollar. Sealand has been the only new country project that has been the subject of an armed insurrection - and as such is the only new country project that boasts a coin mintage by the rebel government. As far as is known the Principality of Sealand has never produced banknotes.

SLC 003B is differentiated from SLC 003C by the presence on the former of the 925 inscription (referring to the coin's silver composition) directly below the shield on the reverse. It is unclear if the historical stated mintage of 25 pieces for the unreeded edge variety of the 1977 Princess Joan $10 coin is for both varieties, or for each of them.

Metal: Antiqued silver
Condition: Proof
Designer: Serge Huard ?

Mintage:
Diameter:  38.6 mm
Denomination: $100
Edge Type: reeded

The origins of this mintage date to 1978, when Sealand's then Prime Minister, Professor Alexander G Achenbach and several associates abducted Prince Roy's son, Michael, as part of an attempted armed takeover of Sealand. Prince Roy re-took Sealand in a helicopter-led assault and imprisoned Achenbach for several weeks. Following his release Achenbach returned to Germany and established an "exile government" which he headed as "Chairman of the Privy Council". In August 1979 he retired "due to health reasons", and annointed as his successor his Minister for Economic Co-operation - Johannes Seiger. Seiger continues to head the rebel government to the present day with the titles of "Prime Minister and Head of the Privy Council". This coin is believed to represent, uniquely, a mintage by a rebel group within a new country project.

SLC 007C represents a special mintage of 500 pieces that was authorised by Prince Roy for sale at the inaugural West Coast Expo, in the US state of California. This variety is identifiable by its unique alpha-numeric serial number format - which commences with the letters WCE  followed by three digits - and a visibly less lustrous finish on the recessed areas of the design.
