Coins of Seborga:
 
Whilst the origins of the Seborga Mint date to 24 December 1666, when a series of gold and silver coins denominated in Luigini and bearing the inscription "monasterium lerinense princepes sepulcri congregationis cassinensis" were minted under the authority of Prince-Abbot Edward, this catalogue is concerned primarily with the Principality's modern releases. These came into being in the mid 1990s when Prince Giorgio reintroduced an independent currency system denominated in Luigini. The modern Luigino was at that time ascribed a value of six US dollars. 

Confusion concerning the precise number of Seborga coin types has long persisted thanks to claims on official Seborga websites that the Prince authorised the reissue of Seborgan currency for the first time on 23 April 1995. What is not mentioned is the fact that a series of coins was minted in 1994 as a pre-release trial. The set, which represents almost half the Principality's entire numismatic output - comprised a 1 Luigino coin design minted in each of twelve different metals (including, unusually, lead), inscribed on the obverse with the word PROVA (trial). A thirteenth 1 Luigino coin (SBC 002) was also minted in 1994 and this did not bear the PROVA inscription, which may indicate that it entered circulation at some point. In addition to the above, two precious metal 100 Luigini coins were minted at this time - one in gold and the other in palladium. Of the total of eight pieces of each that were minted, five were retained by the Seborga mint. 

Overall it is now known that in the 1994-96 period Seborga minted twenty nine coin types in base and precious metals. The former could be exchanged for foreign currency at banks and commercial establishments inside the principality and were in wide day-to-day circulation, while the latter were probably intended for the numismatic collector market. 

The current status of Seborga's coins remains unclear; while official websites imply that Luigini remain a valid means of exchange within the Principality's borders, Seborga has not minted any further coins intended for circulation since 1996 and no longer appears to promote the ones produced before that year. Instead it has limited itself to the production of novelty facsimiles of several of its 17th century releases. It has been suggested that this policy may be an outcome of Italian government pressure on Prince Giorgio to abandon the Luigino as an independent currency.
